The name "Great Escape" alludes to other famous jailbreaks. Some details below - for more, see "The Great Escape" Wikipedia disambiguation page
- The 1944 escape of Allied prisoners of war from Nazi German camp Stalag Luft III in lower Silesia (which is now part of Poland.) Though all but three were recaptured, it is celebrated in both a 1950 Paul Brickhill book and a 1963 film as "The Great Escape".
- The 1962 escape of Frank Morris and the Anglin Brothers from Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary on the island off the coast of San Francisco. None of the three was seen again, and the FBI has still been unable to determine if they got away alive or died in the attempt. A 2001 Jolene Babyak book about the breakout is entitled Breaking The Rock: The Great Escape from Alcatraz.
- The 1983 escape of IRA members from HM Prison Maze in County Antrim, Northern Ireland - another maximum security prison deemed to be among the most escape-proof in all of Europe. The moniker "The Great Escape" was given here by Irish republicans.
